WAR DRIVING - The act of driving around with a laptop equipped with an antenna and software for sniffing out wireless networks (WLAN).

Have a look at Netstumbler for wireless networking news, hotspot location lists and of course, the free proggies for sniffing out wireless networks. Check out 'Ministumbler' for PocketPC. Sweet.

WHAT WE LEARNED FROM PARIS HILTON *

Notes on Privacy and Technology

Who knew that we'd learn anything useful from Paris Hilton's airhead adventures? Aside from slobbering celebrity gossip about who has who's digits, the hacking of Paris Hilton's T-Mobile phone book underscores one thing: privacy is never assured. Anything that is connected to a network of any kind can be accessed by anyone who really, really wants to look at it (fortunately for you, nobody wants your digits, bucko).

Ok, here's what you really want: the links to the Hilton crap.

* Pictures off our own site (until we get threatened with a lawsuit)
* Gorilla Mask
* Defamer (good pictures)
* Wizbang blog
* Tabloid Column (most complete story)

And of course, the phone book.

AMD CONNECTING THE WORLD?

Amd has come out with the Personal Internet Communicator (PIC) in an effort to bring internet connectivity to the third world masses. The goal is to bring 50 percent of the world online by 2015 hence the name: 50x15.

I guess AMD thinks third world nerds need porn (er... family oriented websites, yeaaah) more than flush toilets...

A week or two ago I got this in my Inbox:

Hi,

I recently came across your blog www.nerdyboy.com, and I think its fabulous! Have you stopped writing on your blog?

My blog has a bunch of regular visitors and I think that some of them would enjoy your blog. What would you think about doing a link exchange? If you'd like to, here is my link A New York's Escort Confession. Please let me know what you think.

Thank you for the compliment, but I think our website isn't that swell. Half the links don't work and I'm not sure if the archive section is even accessible. We write in it once in a blue moon and nobody reads it (not that it matters).

My gut's telling me that e-mail is from a front for a soon-to-be porn website or some other scam. I changed the link name slightly because I don't believe we should be participating in this Googlebombing. You want some reasons? "Alexa" insists on having her own plurals and apostrophes in the link. The domain name is plural, so it can fit a porno site. It's registered through a registrar proxy and the e-mail originated from a high-volume hosting company considered ideal for porn. You could claim that she really knows how to protect her identity, but this time the maxim "If there is a doubt, there is no doubt" seems to make more sense.

On a lighter note, here's something that made me laugh today.
